Catherine Malvina Nagy (Michalski) - Class Of 1936 VIEW PROFILE

Catherine Malvina Nagy (Michalski)

Nov. 24, 1918 - Oct. 22, 2010
SOUTH BEND - Catherine Michalski, 91, was born on November 24th, 1918, as Catherine Nagy, to the former Peter and Rose (Toth) Nagy. She was one of 11 children. She passed away October 22nd, 2010. Catherine is survived by three of her children, Carol (Dave) Winstanley of Gilbert, AZ, Chris (Nancy) Michalski of Redondo Beach, CA, and Carl (Terri) Michalski of South Bend, IN. Her husband of over 50 years, Chester, passed on three years ago, and her youngest daughter, Christine, five years ago. Catherine took great pride in her five grandchildren, Evan and Paul Michalski, Adam and Alex (Laura) Winstanley, and Erin (Kevin) Stalzer, all of them college graduates and living on their own. Also surviving are her sister, Anne Fodrocy of South Bend, IN; two brothers, Ken (Betty) Nagy of Niles, MI, and Emery (Patricia) Nagy of Tennessee. Since marrying in 1949, Catherine had lived in South Bend across from Lasalle High School until her husband passed away in 2007. The past three years she lived at Hamilton Communities in New Carlisle. She remained physically active and worked crossword puzzles every day to try and stay sharp. Catherine wasn't afraid of hard work and believed in the value of education. In high school, to take the bookkeeping classes she was interested in, she attended Central High, Riley High and Washington High. After high school, she worked at Portage Realty. She didn't like to be idle when at work, so she offered to do more and more to stay busy. When she quit working to start a family, it took three people to replace her. Her children went through school during the transition to the "new math," and Catherine learned as they did so that she could help with homework. She loved to learn new things. She could not only program the clock on her microwave, but knew how all of the buttons worked as well. Her children inherited Catherine's talent for learning. Catherine's family was the center of her life and she was dedicated to her children. Mrs. Michalski was a member of St. John the Baptist Parish. She enjoyed gardening, crafts, sewing, and helping Logan Center with fundraising projects. Visitation will be from 3-7 p.m. Tuesday, October 26, 2010, in the Kaniewski Funeral Home, 3545 N. Bendix Drive, South Bend, IN, where a parish Rosary will be prayed at 4:00 p.m. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:00 a.m. Wednesday, October 27, 2010, in St. John the Baptist Catholic Church. Burial will follow at St. Joseph Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to Alzheimer's Services of Northern Indiana, P.O.
