KOONTZ  Monroe Milton, widower of Frances Sanford Koontz, died March 5, 2007 at the Veterans Administration Hospital in Lexington. He was born in Washington DC on June 27, 1918 to the late Watson and Clarrena Koontz. After earning his Accounting degree from the University of Chicago with some class work at Indiana University, he enlisted in the Navy to serve in WWII. As a commissioned officer, he was stationed  in Pearl Harbor and served in the Pacific arena. His ship landed several weeks after the bombing of Hiroshima where his duties included damage assessment. His Navy assignments included serving in a variety of capacities and on three LST's, one of which was broken in half during a typhoon but managed to limp back to port in Pearl Harbor.

After the war, the Navy sent him to Dartmouth where he concluded his studies and earned his M.B.A. He served in the US Naval Reserves until 1954. He then served as Controller for Inland Steel Corporation in Portage, IN outside of Chicago and later as Eastern Comptroller for Westinghouse Air Brake Division in Pittsburgh. In 1971 he came to Lexington with Irvin Industries.

In his retirement, he volunteered at the Senior Citizens Center and provided free tax preparation for seniors as the IRS Tax Coordinator. Throughout his life, he was an accomplished pianist and tutored under a protégé of classical pianist Franz Liszt. He helped found the Ogden Dunes Presbyterian Church where he served as a Deacon and a member of the choir. In Lexington, he was a long-time member of Maxwell Street Presbyterian Church.

He is survived survived by two children, Terri Lynn Koontz and Meredith (Mimi) Koontz and dear nephews Michael Koontz of Indianapolis and Daniel Koontz of Phoenix. Visitation will be at Kerr Brothers on Main Street in Lexington on Thurs, March 8, 2007 from 5-8pm and a memorial service will be held this summer near the Koontz homestead in Bremen, IN, Donations suggested to The Huntington's Disease Society of America Kentucky Chapter, 982 Eastern Parkway, Louisville, KY 40217 or The Nature Conservancy.
