SOUTH BEND - Frederick C. Elbel passed away on August 7, 2013, at the age of 95. He was a lifelong resident of South Bend. He was a graduate of Northwestern University, Class of 1941. Mr. Elbel was involved in military band work during WW II. After this, he was the owner of Peerless Press, Inc., until closing the business in 1971. Mr. Elbel was president of the Heritage Society of St. Joseph County, an organization that was formed for the purpose of saving the Old Courthouse of 1855 from demolition in the early 1960s. Besides being a musicologist, Mr. Elbel also maintained avid interests in economics, sociology, art and architecture.

He married Lilla Southard in 1947. She was a graduate of Wells College, Aurora, New York. She preceded him in death in 1997. He is survived by a son, Fred Elbel; and his two daughters, Melissa Sue Elbel, and her two children, Cassandra and Cole Bridges, and Lora Lenander and her husband, Chad, and son, Layton. Also surviving Mr. Elbel are his daughter, Christine Elbel-Auld, her husband, David Auld, and their daughter, Caitlin Auld
