WOODSTOCK - Jeanette Elise Porter, 84, died Sunday, March 23, 2008, at home in Woodstock.

Jeanette Elsie Collins was born June 21, 1924, in Marion, Ind., to Claude and Cora May Collins.

During her childhood, she lived in Marion, South Bend, Ind., Chicago and Barrington. In 1942, she graduated from South Bend Central High School, where she met Glenn Allen Porter. They were married May 30, 1943, and enjoyed 60 years of marriage before Glenn died in 2003.

She worked in the aircraft support services during World War II while her husband was on duty as an aerial engineer with the U.S. Army Air Corps on Guam. After the war, she raised four boys with Glenn. Until 1961, they lived on a farm in Indiana where she managed not only the boys, but the farm operation, as well. They lived in Cary from 1967 until 1976 before moving to their home on the south shore of Lake Geneva, Wis., where for 25 years they fully enjoyed the lake and all the seasons of the area, making many close friends before moving to Woodstock.

She was active in the Eastern Star, moving through all of the chairs to become Grand Worthy Matron. While living in Cary and Lake Geneva, she was similarly active in the Rebekahs. She enjoyed ceramics, reading, travel and photography, but her greatest joy was reserved for her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Survivors include four sons, Michael (Meredith) of Lawrence, Kan., Bryan (Peggy) of Woodstock, Timothy (Cathy) of Hebron and Mark (Kathy) of Lake Geneva; seven grandchildren, Jason (Allie) Porter of Austin, Texas, Corey (Stephanie Smith) Porter of Monrovia, Calif., Kyra (Tom) Tillman of Marengo, Lindsey (Alex Barber) Porter of London, England, Katrina Freund and Eric Porter of Lake Geneva, and Abby Porter of Orlando, Fla.; and six great-grandchildren.

The memorial service will be from noon to 2 p.m. Saturday, March 29, at Schneider-Leucht-Merwin & Cooney Funeral Home, 1211 N. Seminary Ave., Woodstock.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made in her name to the American Cancer Society.
