SOUTH BEND - George Washington Surguy III, 82, of South Bend, IN, passed away on Sunday, May 31, 2009, in his residence at The Sanctuary at Saint Joseph's. He was born on January 17, 1927, in Mishawaka, to the late George W. Surguy II and Grace Gertrude Surguy (Strope).

George graduated from South Bend Central High School (1945).

He served in the United Stated Army and was stationed at Fort Hood, Texas. George worked in the family business, Surguy and Sons Sheet Metal Works in Ardmore IN, with his father and his brother, William Dean Surguy of Wellston, MI. He married the late Armella Edna Surguy (Rach) on April 23, 1954. George has three sons, Dr. George W. (Leanne) Surguy IV of Lakeville IN, Dr. Ronald H. (Marsha) Copenhaver and Ricky L. (Beth) Copenhaver of Largo, FL. He later worked at Royal Metal in Michigan City and was a security guard for Pinkerton at the S.B.C. building. George enjoyed visiting his brother Bill and his very special niece, Patty Ann Surguy of Wellston MI. He often frequented Bob Evans and McDonalds to meet up with his local buddies.

George spent many loving years with his grandchildren, Jeffery George Surguy and Kevin Carl Surguy of Lakeville IN. He had four step-grandchildren, Cynthia, Dawn, Jason and Christopher Copenhaver of Florida. Other family members include a niece, Marlene Lisek of Mishawaka, and nephew, William Surguy of Plymouth IN. George was a kind, hardworking, compassionate man who will be sadly missed.

Visitation will be held from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. Thursday, June 4th, in the Welsheimer Family Funeral Home, 521 N. William St. Funeral services will be at 1:00 p.m. Friday, June 5th, and friends may visit with the family one hour prior to services. Burial will be at Highland Cemetery. Our family wishes to express our sincere thanks to all the staff at The Sanctuary of Saint Joseph's. Memorial contributions may be made to the Sanctuary at Saint Joseph's, 4600 W.
