SOUTH BEND - Carl Joseph Giefing, Sr. passed away peacefully at his home on Saturday, February 1, 2014 at the age of 86. Carl was born on November 2, 1927 in South Bend and has been a lifelong resident.
On April 3, 1971 in South Bend, he married the former Sara Marie Flowers. Carl is survived by his wife, Marie; his two sons, Carl Giefing, Jr. of South Bend and Paul (Alrea) Giefing of Westfield, IN; five stepchildren, Terry Huff of South Bend, Phil Huff of Goshen, IN, Sheryl Bloomer and Sandra Baker, both of Indianapolis, and Brenda Madden of Nashville, TN, 13 grandchildren, 6 great-grandchildren, and one sister, Mary Kitt of South Bend.
The son of Mary and Herman Giefing, Carl was a Notre Dame graduate, U.S. Army Veteran of WW II and a retired accountant for AM General Corporation, South Bend, after 33 years. More importantly, he was a kind, loyal and genuine man who loved his family, friends, pets and his quiet home on Oak Road. Carl had a gift for finding joy in the simple things in life like his back patio, a quiet dinner at the Fish Lake Lodge and slowly mowing the 4 acre lawn on his Wheel Horse. In life, he was always considered the "one guy" you would want on your side in any situation and he will be remembered as such in his passing.
The family welcomes all friends to join in the celebration of the life of Carl J. Giefing, Sr. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 1:30 p.m. on Wednesday, February 5, 2014 at the St. Jude Catholic Church, 19704 Johnson Road, South Bend, IN. Friends may visit with the family two hours prior to Mass at the church. Military graveside services will follow at Sumption Prairie Cemetery, South Bend. Palmer Funeral Home-Guisinger Chapel is assisting the family.
The family would also ask that everyone join them at 4:00 p.m. for a few hours of food, fellowship and celebration at the American Legion Post 303, 2503 Mishawaka Avenue, South Bend, IN. In lieu of flowers, contributions in memory of Carl J. Giefing, Sr. may be donated to Hospice Foundation, 501 Comfort Place, Mishawaka, IN 46545.
