Charles "Tuggy" Finger

  • October 23, 1926 - December 29, 2012
  • South Bend, Indiana

Charles "Tuggy" Finger passed away peacefully Saturday morning, December 29, 2012. Husband, Dad, Grandpa, Great Grandpa, brother, uncle, friend-he was the best there was and will be missed by all who were privileged to have known him.

He was born October 23, 1926, in Blanford, Indiana, and was predeceased by his parents Berthold and Helen Finger, his brother John Finger, his sister Geneva Smith, and his best friend George "Cy" Dimich. He is survived by the love of his life, Deloris, their son Gary (Malia) Finger of Ponte Vedra, FL, their daughter Gwen (Barney) Oldfield of South Bend, their granddaughter, Jennifer Finger Allen D.C. of St. Augustine, FL, their grandson, Zane Finger D.C. of Jax Beach, FL and their 4 great-grandchildren Hailey and Whitney Allen, Ashton and Emma Finger. He is also survived by many nieces and nephews who loved their "Uncle Tug."

After graduation he served his country in the Merchant Marines. He and Cy Could sure tell some stories about that adventure! When he returned home, he married his high school sweatheart Deloris Moore at Westminster Presbyterian Church on May 22, 1948. They lived in South Bend most of their lives except for a short time in Florida.

Tuggy's career began at Studebakers, then I & M and Brinks. He then got into sales at Hamilton Harris, Don Medow and Basney Ford. He was active in Sunnyside Church as an usher, a deacon, and the pitcher for their softball team-he was well known for his pitching prowess.

Dad's first love was his family. He adored his grandkids and was proud of all their achievements. Dad's second love was sports. Basketball, softball, handball, racquetball, pool-you name it, he excelled at it. In his later years he enjoyed sports as a spectator, particularly women's basketball, "played the wasy the game should be played" according to him. He looked forward to breakfast every Tuesday with his Central High School buddies. Anyone who knew him also knew how much he lied to play cards: especially euchre. Most of all, he enjoyed life and winning!

Our family fondly remembers all of the good times we had together on camping trips in Michigan, Wisconsin and Estes Park, CO. Dad loved fishing. He had unlimited patience and could out wait any fish in the lake.

Vieiwing will be held on Wednesday January 2, 2013, from 10 to 12 pm, with services to start at noon. All at Sunnyside Presbyterian Church, 115 S. Francis St., South Bend, IN 46617, with Pastor Jamie Miller officiating. Memorial donations may be made to Sunnyside in rememberance of Tuggy.
