V. Eugene Butterworth May 14, 1926 - July 22, 1997 SOUTH BEND — Mr. V. Eugene "Gene" "Butter" Butterworth, 71, of Longwood Drive, South Bend, Ind., passed away of natural causes on Tuesday, July 22, in his residence. He was born on May 14, 1926, in Charleston, S.C., and lived most of his life in the South Bend-Niles area. On July 16, 1947, in South Bend, he married Helen L. "Penny" Pennell, who passed away on Dec. 20, 1991. After his retirement as a self-employed carpenter 14 years ago, he worked at Montgomery Wards Service as a delivery driver.

Mr. Butterworth is survived by two daughters, Shelly L. Couch of St. Petersburg, Fla., and Gail A. Payne of Three Oaks, Mich.; two sons, Hobert A. and Brad L., both of South Bend; six grandchildren; and by one great-grandchild. A sister and two brothers also survive, Camilla B. Goerg of South Bend, John of Speedway, Ind., and Charles of Canyon Lake, Texas. Mr. Butterworth was a World War II U.S. Air Force veteran, and was a member of the Chain-O-Lakes Conservation Club.

The family invites friends and neighbors to a memorial service to be held this Thursday, Aug. 7, of l p.m., at the McGann Funeral Home, Council Oak Gardens Chapel, 21275 W. Cleveland Road, near Portage Road. For information or directions call 277-8004. Memorial donations may be made to the St. Joseph County Unit of the American Heart Association, 2410 W.
