Mary G. Carleton Jan. 24, 1923 - June 20, 2014 SOUTH BEND - Mary Geyer Carleton, 91, of South Bend, Indiana, passed away peacefully on June 20, 2014, following a brief illness. Mary was born on January 24, 1923, to Dr. Claude and Retha Geyer in South Bend, Indiana. Mary was preceded in death by her parents, Dr. Claude and Retha Geyer, and her beloved son, Mark G. Carleton. She is survived by her husband, William A. Carleton; her sister, Kathryn Winant of Williamstown, Mass.; her sons, William A. Carleton, Jr. (Gail) and Eric A. Carleton (Kathleen); her grandchildren, Loran Carleton Parker (Matthew), Andrew G. Carleton, Sarah A. Carleton, Peter E. Carleton and Elizabeth C. Carleton; and great-grandchildren, Caitlyn R. and Rhys E. Parker.

Mary was born and raised in South Bend and is an alumna of South Bend Central High School. She continued her education at Duke Universityearning a political science degree in 1945 and becoming a proud member of Kappa Kappa Gamma Sorority.

On March 19, 1949, she married William A. Carleton in South Bend, Indiana, and began a loving partnership of 65 years.

Mary was a devoted mother to three sons, and was active in several community service organizations including the Junior League of South Bend and the Children's Dispensary of South Bend. She took joy in gardening, playing bridge, and golfing with friends. She was a lifelong follower of the Chicago Cubs baseball teama passion she passed along to her family. She cared deeply about her family and was very proud of her children and grandchildren. Recently, she was a devoted caregiver to her husband and was always concerned about the wellbeing of others even as she was fighting her own illness.

Per her wishes, there will be a private burial service at North Liberty's Eastlawn Cemetery. A memorial service will be held at Andre Place in Holy Cross Village, Notre Dame, Indiana, on June 30, 2014, at noon. Rev. Adelia Kelso of the First Presbyterian Church will preside.
