Lewis Samuel Woods, 95, a beloved husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather, from Edwardsburg, Mich., passed away Friday, Feb. 12, 2016 with his family at his bedside at the Southfield Village in South Bend.

Lewis was born Jan. 27, 1921 in Noble County, to the late Harry J. and Bessie M. (Wolfe) Woods. Lewis married Betty L. Dunn Nov. 9, 1941 in South Bend. Lewis and Betty shared 74 years of commitment to each other.

Lewis was a graduate of Central High School in South Bend and South Bend College of Commerce. Lewis's first job was at Bendix as a roller skater delivering blue prints. After Bendix he worked on the assembly line at Studebaker Corporation. Lewis and Betty started a TV repair shop in a garage with a friend and he later retired in 1985 as the president of Marquette Radio & TV Service INC.

Lewis served his country as a private first class in the 75th Division of the U.S. Army during WWII. He was a recipient of a Purple Heart and received an Honorable Discharge in 1946 for his military service. Lewis loved photography. He also enjoyed fishing, boating, canoeing, swimming and water skiing into his late 80s. Lewis and Betty were members of Community Baptist Church in Edwardsburg, Mich.

Lewis is survived by his loving wife, Betty; two daughters, Susan (Dennis) Place, of Merrillville, Linda Garcia, of Menominee, Mich., four grandchildren, Sandy (Kevin) Elliott, of South Bend, Andrew Garcia, of Menominee, Mich., Nathan Garcia, of Irvine, Calif. and Lisa Garcia, of Wauwatosa, Wis.; four great-grandchildren, Aaron Endres, Kayla (Joshua) Dickson, Emily Endres and Alec Garcia.

Along with his parents, Lewis was preceded in death by his infant son, James Brian Woods; a sister, Dora Passau; and three brothers, Harry R. Woods, Leonard Woods and Glenn H. Woods.

The family will receive friends from 5 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 17 at Bubb Funeral Chapel, 3910 N. Main St., Mishawaka. The funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. with one hour of visitation prior Thursday, Feb. 18 with Pastor Dan Thomas officiating at Community Baptist Church, 28647 U.S. 12 W., Edwardsburg, Mich., 49112. Burial of remains will take place at St. Joseph Valley Memorial Park in Granger, at a later date.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Community Baptist Church.
