Chris V. Michalos passed away peacefully in his residence on Thursday, March 7. His wife, Josephine (Cwill) Michalos, predeceased him in 2008 after 63 years of marriage, and a brother, Fred V. Michalos, in 2001.

Three children survive: Bruce R. and Gregory V. Michalos and Christie Michalos-Kaniewski all of South Bend. Also surviving, a sister, Mary M. Pawlowski of Mt. Prospect, IL; seven grandchildren, Christopher (Kimberly Ann) Michalos of Colorado Springs, CO, Kimberly Ann Michalos (Gabe) Clemens of Fishers, IN, Jennifer Michalos (Casey) Hudson of Littleton, CO, Brittany Boits (Kevin) Bass of Pooler, GA, Niki Boits of Warrenton, VA., and Ashley and Lauren Michalos of Cincinnati, OH, and seven great grandchildren; Aidan and Noah Michalos of Colorado Springs, Logan and Preston Bass, Savannah, and Corinne Josephine and Mari Hudson of Littleton.

Chris was born in South Bend, Indiana on June 30, 1921 to Victor and Politimi (Georgelas) Michalos. He graduated from South Bend Central High School.

During World War II he served with the Army Air Force and while stationed in Newburgh, NY met and married Josephine Cwill on May 20, 1945. After completing his military duty, Chris and Jo returned to South Bend. Like so many local residence, Chris worked at the Studebaker Corporation, as Supervisor of Safety, until 1954 at which time he joined the Diversey Corporation as a salesman and soon became a district manager. In 1958, Chris joined his brother Fred in owning and operating the Victory Bar.

In 1962, He and Josephine opened and operated the Koffee Kup Restaurant on South Michigan Street, soon adding another location at Lafayette Street. He had a reputation for creamy rice pudding and tangy macaroni and cheese. They closed and retired from the Koffee Kup in 1983. Chris and Jo traveled extensively during the next 25 years visiting all but 5 states in the US, Hawaii, Egypt, the Holy Land, and three tours of Europe. They had the good fortune to receive a personal blessing from Pope John Paul II in 2003 at the Vatican.

Chris was a member of Christ the King Catholic Church since 1949. He served on many church committees; Cub master of Cub Scout Pack 451, the Ushers Club, the Holy Name Society, and Chairperson of Harvest House. Chris belonged to Council 553 of the Knights of Columbus and served this council in several capacities: South Bend Columbus Club, treasurer, member of the First Degree Team, and Rosary Committee Chairman. He was a member of the Order of Ahepa, (a National Greek Fraternity). He was a Past President of South Bend Chapter 100 and for many years served as the treasurer. In 1995 the Order of Ahepa, District 12, presented him with the coveted Prometheus award for his many contributions to the Order.

Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, March 13, 2013 at Kaniewski Funeral Home, 3545 N. Bendix Drive, South Bend, IN. There will be a combined Parish and Knights of Columbus Rosary recitation at 7pm followed by an Order of Ahepa memorial service.

A Mass of Christian burial will be held at Christ the King Catholic Church at 10 am Thursday, March 14, 2013. Internment will follow at Southlawn Cemetery.
