Joanne (Michaelis) Johnson

Word has been received of the death of Mrs. Joanne C. Johnson, 50, of Bremerton, Wash., formerly of South Bend, on Monday in a Tacoma, Wash., hospital after a brief illness. She was a self-employed certified public accountant. Born on Sept 5, 1933, in New Richland, Minn., she lived in South Bend for several years.

On June 3, 1956, in South Bend, as Joanne Michaelis, she married Dirk Johnson, who survives. She also is survived by a daughter, Miss Karen Johnson, at home; two sons, Gary, at home, and Eric of Los Angeles; two sisters, Mrs. Margaret Rusthoven of Palos Heights, Ill., and Ms. Jean Heston of South Bend; four brothers, Earl and Robert Michaelis, both of Mishawaka, John Michaelis of Ancorage, Alaska, and Ronald Michaelis of South Bend, and her mother, Mrs. Eva Hinkle of South Bend.

Mrs. Johnson was a 1952 graduate of the former Central High School, served with the Marine Corps from 1953 to 1958 and received a bachelor of arts degree in 1976 from the University of Hawaii.

Memorial services will be at 5 p.m. Sunday in Evangel Heights United Methodist Church, with Rev. Michael Coyner, pastor, officiating. Cremation has taken place. Memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society.
