Tim Rouse - Class Of 1957 VIEW PROFILE

Rev. Timothy A. Rouse Dec. 14, 1938 - Oct. 18, 2014 SOUTH BEND - Rev. Dr. Timothy Allen Rouse died on Saturday, October 18, 2014, after a summer-long struggle with his health. Timothy was born in South Bend on December 14, 1938, to Lemuel Hugh and Marguerite (Stewart) Rouse, the third of eleven children. His older siblings, Lemuel Jr. and Marguerite, died in infancy. He was successfully treated for his recently diagnosed heart disease and was on his way to being rehabilitated when he was viciously attacked by a hateful life-threatening diabetes related condition. Try as he would though, he was not able to overcome this illness and finally succumbed. He departed this life at the age of 75.

Tim was educated in the South Bend Community Schools, including Perley Elementary, and was a very proud graduate of Central High School. His passion for education continued long into his adulthood as he sought and received certifications to enhance his career in both the ordained Methodist ministry and public service.

Tim served his country proudly in the United States Marine Corps in Okinawa and the Far East. After his military service, in July 1964, Tim and Hazel Green were married in Freeport, Ill. They are parents to six daughters, Karleen (Steven) Breathett, Kelli (Cedric) Buchanon, Kimberly (LaMont) Hurt, Karin (Carl) Duncan, Kailah (Yul) Lee, and by joyous family acclamation, the sixth and final daughter, Sharon Hawkins. His 17 grandchildren include: Shawniece (Charles) Patton, Torrance (Danisha) Rouse, Sherrell Hawkins, Brandon Rouse, Brittney Scott, Sharmane Hawkins, Lauren Rouse, Lindsay Rouse, Tyler Rouse, Kaylan Watkins, Chelsea Reed, Steven Breathett, Jr., Sarah Lipsey, Yul Lee Jr., Kiyah Lee, Timothy Lee and Taylor Lee. There are also 10 great-grandchildren. Tim's passing leaves a giant hole in the hearts and lives of his remaining siblings which includes: Rev. Michael (Alice) Rouse, Anthony Rouse, Rosamond Ferguson, Kathy Stelivan and Fredrick Rouse.

Rev. Rouse believed that it was his duty to serve others and to that end he served as pastor, 24 years, at First A.M.E. Zion Church, having been appointed in 1990. He also served as proctor for 2nd-year students and was a member of several committees in the District and Annual Conference. Over the years, Rev. Rouse has received many awards and honors. A former Bethel, IUSB and Trinity Bible College student, Rev. Rouse was selected as the speaker for the 69th Commencement where he was awarded an Honorary Doctor of Divinity degree. His public service commitment includes South Bend N.A.A.C.P., President, board member; Memorial Hospital, N.N.R.O., Casa. U.R.C. and DuComb Center. Chaplain St. Joseph County Police Dept. SB Common Council, At-Large, 7 yrs. (also, Past President), Facilitator, Seven Habits, Steven Covey, Certified Clinician-National Christian Counselors Assoc.

Timothy was preceded in death by his parents, Lemuel and Marguerite Rouse. Siblings who predeceased him besides those in infancy include Brenda Long, Kenneth Rouse and Gregory Rouse. He was also predeceased by a niece, Pamela Walker, and a nephew, Mark Rouse. A host of nieces and nephews will miss beloved "Uncle Timmy."

Public visitation for Rev. Dr. Timothy A. Rouse will be held today, October 24, 2014, from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at Clark-O'Neal Funeral Home, 2702 Lincoln Way West, South Bend. Funeral services will be 1 P.M. Saturday, October 25, 2014, at Greater St. John Missionary Baptist Church, 101 N. Adams Street, South Bend.
