SOUTH BEND - Donald E. Berta, 78, of South Bend, passed away at 12:10 PM Thursday, November 24th, in his residence. Mr. Berta was born on September 11, 1933, in South Bend, and had resided in the area his lifetime.

On September 11, 1993, he married the former Julie A. Veach, who survives. Also surviving are a daughter, Marsha Ann Berta; and a son, Donald R. "Rick" Berta. Two step-daughters, Lori (Michael) Farinella and Jill (Bill) Canton. Nine grandchildren, Danielle and Maggie Konstantine, Josh Miller, Taylor and Mika Farinella, Brad Canton, Desiree Warner, and Dustin and Lauren Berta, all whom he loved and cherished. A brother, David C. Berta, and a sister-in-law, Nona Berta; father-in-law, Charles D. Veach; and brother-in-law, Joel (Nancy) Veach.

Mr. Berta was preceded in death by his parents, Michael and Peg (Schohl); and by a brother, F. Dale Berta.

Mr. Berta retired from the Bendix Corp. in South Bend after many years of service.

Don graduated from South Bend Central High School, Class of 1951.

In his youth he enjoyed racing motorcycles, hunting and hiking. Later in life, he enjoyed restoring Harley-Davidson motorcycles and as an experienced tool and die maker, he sold handmade parts for Harleys around the world. Don loved cross-country skiing at St. Patrick's Park where there is a shelter bearing his name. In his spare time, he loved spending time with his family, and walking his dog, Jenna, and loved his cat, Toby. His greatest legacy was his family. Mr. Berta was a loving husband, brother, father and grandfather and will be dearly missed by all those who loved him.

Visitation hours will be from 4-7 PM today, Nov. 29th, at HANLEY & Sons "Southwest Chapel" Funeral Home, located at West Ireland Road / Indiana 23, South Bend. Graveside services only at 2:00 PM Wednesday, Nov. 30th, at St. Joseph Valley Memorial Park Granger, IN. The family would like all memorial contributions to be made to the Wounded Warriors Project in lieu of flowers. The HANLEY & Sons "Southwest Chapel" Funeral Home handled arrangements and extends its deepest sympathy to the Berta family.
