SOUTH BEND - Frederick Matthew Hopkins, 72, a resident of Chalk Maple Court, South Bend, Indiana, passed away suddenly on Saturday, July 2, 2011, at 12:50 a.m. in Memorial Hospital. "Fred," as he was affectionately known, was born on May 3, 1939, in South Bend, Indiana, to Frederick M. and Lillian (Chinn) Hopkins.

As a lifetime area resident, Fred was educated in the South Bend Community Schools and graduated from Central High School in 1959. He also graduated from IUSB South Bend with a degree in general studies.

In 1965 he was discharged from the United States Marine Corps after serving four years.

He and Mary Hopkins were united in marriage in South Bend. She preceded him in death in 2004. Mr. Hopkins retired from Honeywell (The Bendix Corp.) after 30 years of employment.

In addition, he worked for the U. S. Post Office. He was a member of the Indiana Black Expo, a season ticket holder to the Notre Dame Girls Basketball, and also a member of Pentecostal Cathedral COGIC.

Surviving relatives include two daughters, Trina Robinson of New Orleans, LA, and Veda Robinson of Los Angeles, CA; one son, Archie (Tracy) Robinson of Westfield, IN; four grandchildren and five great-grandchildren; four sisters, Charlotte Chinn and Janice Chinn, both of Indianapolis, IN, and Shirley Chinn and Tera Redd, both of South Bend, IN; sisters-in-law, Brenda (William) Green and Muriel (Tyrone) Taylor; and a brother-in-law, Chester (Aneita) Sinclair; along with other relatives and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Frederick and Lillian Hopkins; his wife, Mary; and a sister, Marlene (Hopkins) McBride.

Funeral services for Mr. Frederick Hopkins will be held at 1:00 p.m. Friday, July 8, 2011, at Pentecostal Cathedral COGIC, where friends may call one hour prior to the services. Interment will follow at Highland Cemetery. Arrangements have been entrusted to Alford's Mortuary where messages of condolence may be e-mailed to alfordsmortuary@comcast.net, c/o the Hopkins family.
