Dr. Richard A. Schaphorst, M.D., 70, of Chandler Boulevard, Mishawaka, Ind., loving husband, father, grand- father and humanitarian, passed away at 1:40 am. Wednesday, Aug. 22, following an illness.  He was born Oct. 3, 1930, in ‘South Bend, Ind., to August H. and Ruth (Hesse) Schaphorst, who preceded him in death. 

In 1953 he married the former Jamie Ann Walter in South Bend. She survives. He is also survived by a son, Richard E. (Suzanna) Schaphorst of Osceola, Ind.; two daughters, Marjorie Schaphorst of Mishawaka and Susan (Robert) Jacobson of Kalispell, Mont.; two sisters, Marlene Siebert of Mishawaka and Carolyn Fleck of Kendallville, ind.; and by 11 grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.

A graduate of South Bend Central High School, class of 1949, he retired in 1989 after 31 years as a general practitioner in Mishawaka. He was a captain in the U.S. Army Reserve, past president of the St. Joseph County Medical Society, and past president of the St. Joseph County Board of Health on which he served for 35 years. He was on the board of directors of Boy Scouts of America, and was a rare recipient of the Silver Beaver International Medal. He was on the board of the 13th district of the General Practice Association, and was also past chief of staff at Saint Joseph Community Hospital He was on the organizing committee of Meals on Wheels. and was also a draft board doctor He was active in the Civic Theater. was a mem-ber of the Presbytenan Players. and had performed in numerous local productions including a lead rote in Hello Dolly He was an active member in the Mishawaka chapter of Kiwanis, and was also a member of the Elks Club and the Masonic Lodge.
