SOUTH BEND - Fred R. Szuch, 83, of South Bend, Indiana, passed away Tuesday, October 22, 2013. He was born November 22, 1929, in South Bend, Indiana. Fred was retired from the United States Army as a Sergeant Major after 39 years of service.

He was a member & past Commander of the American Legion Post 50; served on the Board of Directors of the Military Honor Park; served as Secretary of the St. Joseph County Veterans Past Commanders Council; member of the Military Honor Guard to assist at funerals; member of 8ET40; served as Secretary of the Chain-O-Lakes Conservation Club; graduated from South Bend Central High School; & attended Indiana University, South Bend.

Fred is survived by his children, Denise (Steve) Horvath of South Bend, Sherrie Sollars of St. James City, Florida, Michele (Anthony) Cross of Henderson, Nevada, David Szuch of South Bend; grandchildren, Brittney, Anthony, Brandon, Caleb, Karsten; and great-grandchildren, Izabella, Giana, Jaxon & Carmella.

Graveside services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, November 9, 2013, Sacred Heart Cemetery on the corner of Western & Pine in South Bend. Kaniewski Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements. To send condolences online, please visit Kaniewski.com.
