SOUTH BEND - Herbert Durand Smith, affectionately known as "Herbie," 61, of South Bend, Indiana, departed this life on Thursday, July 14, 2011. He was born on January 11, 1950, in South Bend, Indiana, to the union of Dorothy (Ivory) and the late Donald P. Smith Sr.

Herbie graduated from South Bend Central High School in 1969.

Soon after he enlisted in the United States Marine Corps, and was a Military Policeman, and served in Vietnam and the Philippine Islands. He received many military awards and distinctions before completing his tour of duty.

On June 19, 1989, in Las Vegas, Nevada, Herbie was united in marriage to Dorine (Blake) Smith, who survives. He was employed by the City of South Bend as a Supervisor of the Bureau of Sewers; he retired in 2008. Herbie received many awards in his lifetime and, most recently, in 2010, he received the Key to the City of South Bend. Herbie leaves to cherish his many fond and loving memories his wife, Dorine; three sons, Tyrus (Delibra) Smith of Fort Wayne, Indiana, Herbert Smith Jr. and Antrum (Tamika) Phelps of South Bend, Indiana; two daughters, Demita (Mikel Banks) Smith, also of Fort Wayne, and Ericka Coley of Atlanta, Georgia. Seven grandchildren, Raeshun, Tierra, Tyjana, Antrunae, Ah'niuah, Jarrell and Mickael. His mother, Mrs. Dorothy Smith; and four brothers, Donald "Duck" Smith Jr. and Ivory "Soap" Smith, Tony Smith and Philip Smith. Five sisters, Sharon Smith, Linda (Melvin) Johnson, Candice Thompson, Trisha and Theresa Smith. A special uncle, Jackie Ivory, and his father and mother-in-law, Hartie and Louise Blake, all of South Bend, along with a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and friends.

Along with his father, he was also preceded in death by his paternal grandparents, Ninell and Theresa Smith, and maternal grandparents, Grant and Magnolia Ivory.

Herbie enjoyed listening to the blues, dancing, riding his bicycle, travelling, and spending time with his family. Often you would find him in his garage tinkering with something or just relaxing and listening to his music. He will be dearly missed by all who knew and loved him.

A visitation will be held Wednesday, July 20, 2011, from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. in the Clark-O'Neal Funeral Home, 2702 Lincoln Way West. The funeral services will be held Thursday, July 21, 2011, in Greater St. John Missionary Baptist Church, 101 N. Adams St., South Bend, Indiana, visitation 11:00 a.m. and funeral services will follow at 12:00 noon. Clark-O'Neal Funeral Home has been entrusted with funeral services.
