John David McClure

John David McClure, 87, passed away on Thursday, March 9, 2023. John was born in South Bend, IN on May 19, 1935, to the late Charles and Ruby (Brown) McClure. On August 6, 2003, he married Carol Lawton who survives. Also surviving is his son, Kevin McClure; stepsons, Brian (Lorriana) Lawton, Gerald (June) Lawton and Stephen Lawton, along with many nieces and nephews. He is preceded in death by his parents; son, David McClure; sisters, Patricia McClure Voss and Marilyn McClure Hoffman and half-brother, Brandon McClure.

John was a 1953 graduate of South Bend Central High School. After high school he proudly served in the United States Marine Corp during the Korean War. John was chosen as one of the 5 marines in the re-enactment of the raising the flag on Iwo Jima in 1955, commemorating US Marines by depicting the famous photo from Iwo Jima, Japan in 1945. This was something he was very proud and honored to be a part of.

After he was honorably discharged from the Marine Corp as a Corporal, he went on to receive his bachelor’s degree from Union College in Barbourville, KY where he was selected by the college to appear in the national publication of “Outstanding young men of America . He was a member of the Sigma Phi Epsilon fraternity.

John worked for the City of Vista, CA later retired from Atherton Homes as the Director of Finance.

John was an avid catch and release bass fisherman. He was a member of the American Legion Local and VFW.

A funeral service will be held Monday, March 13, 2023 at 1:00 PM in the mausoleum at Fairview Cemetery in Mishawaka with full military honor conducted by the American Legion 161 and VFW 360 burial squad.
