SOUTH BEND - Mr. Donald G. Monroe expired on January 9, 2008. He was a native of South Bend, Indiana. He was born to the union of Griffin and Viro Monroe and reared in South Bend in subsequent union of his step father Earl Thompson Sr. and his mother, along with his stepsister Gloria and Patricia Thompson, all of whom preceded him in death.

A stepbrother, Earl Thompson Jr. Survives and resides in Gahanna, Ohio. They maintained their love and respect of each other over the passing years and miles of separation. Donald met the love of his life, Beverly Withers, in 1959 and they were married in 1960. He is survived by his wife, Beverly Monroe; seven children, Malaida (Larrie), both of South Bend, Chari l. (Daryl) Anderson of Lithonia, Georgia, D. Typher (Dee Ann) and Robert C., both of Indianapolis, Troy A. (Cheryl), Marcus T. and Jaimes l. (Shantel) of South Bend; 16 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

Donald graduated from South Bend Central High School and then served in the United States Marine Corps from 1958 to 1962.

His mantra became build a strong family based on faith in one's God, love and respect for each other, and all things will be added to you. Our family wishes to acknowledge the love and care of all our extended family and friends. We want to thank all the young men who came through our doors and took the time to listen to Mr. Monroe's endless counsel and shared their lives as friends to our family. We wish to say a special thank you to Dr. Ronald Nelson and Memorial Hospital for their excellent and compassionate care. Services will be conducted by Iman Abdulla Nabaa and Rev. G.l. Thompson at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday, January 12, 2008, in Alford's Mortuary. Visitation will take place at the chapel from noon to 1:00 p.m. Arrangements have been entrusted to Alford's Mortuary where bereavement messages may be sent to alfordsmortuary@comcast.net, c/o the Monroe family.

A gracious thank you to loving, supportive Muslim and Christian friends.
