Valerie Bruce (Kelver)

VALERIE L. (BRUCE) KELVER

Valerie L. Kelver Oct. 25, 1939 - April 27, 2015 SOUTH BEND - Valerie L. Kelver, 75, of South Bend, Indiana, passed away Monday, April 27, 2015, after a long and hard-fought battle with cancer. Valerie was born on October 25, 1939, in Logansport, Indiana, to C. Eldon and Alyce E. (Norris) Bruce. Valerie grew up on the near northwest side of South Bend and was a proud 1958 graduate of South Bend Central High School.

After high school, Valerie went to work at the former St. Joseph Bank, where she was employed for 17 years. Valerie later worked for the South Bend Community School Corporation and retired from the University of Notre Dame in October 2004 where she was employed as a senior administrative assistant.

On October 24, 1970, Valerie married her loving husband of 44 years, Daniel C. Kelver, who survives. She and Daniel had two children, Angela K. (Bryan) Hall of Granger, Indiana and Michael B. Kelver of South Bend, Indiana and five grandchildren, Chloe Hall, Stella Hall, Vivian Hall, Ashton Kelver and Eliza Kelver. Valerie is also survived by her sister, Norrine (Arthur) McCune of Granger, Indiana; and her brother, Norris Bruce of Mishawaka, Indiana.

Valerie was preceded in death by her parents, C. Eldon and Alyce E. Bruce and her sister-in-law, Catherine Bruce.

Valerie was unfailingly kind and generous with both her time and her laughter. She was a devoted wife and mother who would (and did) do anything and everything for her husband, children and grandchildren. Valerie also had many wonderful life-long friendships that she cherished. She had a great sense of humor and loved nothing more than getting together and laughing with her friends. Valerie was a member of the former First Christian Church of South Bend for over 60 years and was a current member of Clay United Methodist Church. She enjoyed and was very active in both her church communities. Above all, Valerie lived her life with warmth and grace and showed her children every day how to love unconditionally. She was greatly loved and will be dearly missed.
