KARL G. GRORUD

Dec. 5, 1938 - April 4, 2009
SOUTH BEND - Karl George Grorud, 70, of High Street, South Bend, passed away in his residence on April 4, 2009, after suffering an apparent heart attack. He was born on December 5, 1938, in Bismarck, North Dakota, to Dr. Alton C. Grorud and Ruth Vivian (George) Grorud. Karl is survived by two sisters, Gail Berg of San Diego, California, and Ruth Hanson of Vandalia, Michigan; four nephews, Lance Ross, Trent Grorud, Mark Grorud and Dr. Rick Berg; one niece, Dr. Lauren Hanson; four grandnephews and two grandnieces.

In spite of a handicap, Karl attended South Bend Central High School and served in the 6th U.S. Army, Btry C., 4th Bn, 42nd Arty, at Ft. Lewis, Washington. After his honorable discharge, he worked for 35 years at the LaSalle Hotel, Down Under, Hans Haus and Kalafat's without missing a day or ever being late.

Paramount among his attributes were his total acceptance of others, positive attitude, colorful analogies, survivalist tendencies, and love of nature and solitude. "The worth of that (my being), is that which it contains, and that is this, and this with thee remains." (Shakespeare LXXIV) Karl's passing will be observed in a non-traditional, private memorial, comforting and encompassing the diverse beliefs of those who love him.

The Hanley & Sons "Southwest Chapel" Funeral Home handled arrangements and extends its deepest sympathy to the family of Karl G. Grorud.
