Susan Elaine Smith (Barfell)

Susan Elaine Barfell
Jun. 10, 1947 - Jan. 14, 2008

ELKHART - So many hearts have been touched by God through a very special angel. Susan Barfell, 60, of Elkhart passed away at home on January 14, 2008, at 5:30 p.m. after a long courageous battle with cancer.

Susan touched so many lives, with her loving heart for all people. She leaves behind family, so many friends and neighbors, with hearts a little fuller with the "Fruit of the Spirit" than before they knew her. Susan was born on June 10, 1947, in South Bend, IN. She is survived by a loving family who remembers her loving heart for them and others, with the joy of living in God's ways, including husband, Don; three sons, Blair, Justin (Kristy) and Jason; grandchildren, Austin and Averi; sister, Donna (Steve) Johnson; and mother-in-law, Margaret Barfell; along with her family and friends. Susan was preceded in death by her parents, Howard and Jean Smith of South Bend.

Susan graduated from Central High School of South Bend, IN, on June 10, 1965, and graduated from Indiana University in 1959 with a degree in education, and taught in the South Bend school system. She was a secretary and treasurer as co-owner of Sunthimer Hardware, secretary at River Oaks Community Church for 10 years, and secretary at Dr. David Strycker's, DDS, office for 10 years as a receptionist. She will always be remembered for her strong faith in our Lord, Jesus, devoted wife and mother, always pleasant smile, her kind words, and her positive attitude towards life itself. On a clear night, look for the brightest star and you will see our Susan. John 11:25 Jesus said to her, "I am the resurrection and the life. He who believes in Me, though he may die, he shall live. John 11:26 "And whoever lives and believes in Me shall never die."

Our family will greet friends on Thursday, January 17, 2008, from 4 to 8 p.m. in the Hartzler-Gutermuth-Inman Funeral Home. The funeral will take place at Hartzler- Gutermuth-Inman on Friday at 10 a.m. Interment will follow in St. Joseph Valley Memorial Park, 375 W. Cleveland Road, Granger, IN. Friends who wish may honor Susan's memory with a contribution to United Cancer Services of Elkhart County and Church Community Services of Elkhart.
