SOUTH BEND - Memorial Service for Michael Jerome Martin was held on Saturday, July 11, 2009 at 2:00 p.m. in the Robena Raymond Memorial Chapel 238 West Main Street, Statesboro, GA 30458

Michael Jerome Martin was born on June 12, 1946 in South Bend, IN to the late Romero and Slyvester Martin. He attended South Bend Community Schools and graduated as a record holding track and football star from Central High School. He was awarded a track scholarship to the University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff and went to graduate with a bachelor's degree in health and recreation.

Mike became the first director of the Martin Luther King Jr. Recreation Center in South Bend, Indiana in 1974. He enjoyed working with young children, he also enjoyed fishing and listening to his music. He worked in Parkland Recreation, banking and owned his own Janitorial Service in Decatur, Georgia.

After relocating in 1983 at the age of eight he joined and was baptized at Pilgrim Baptist Church in South Bend, IN. In 1984 he joined Green Forest Community Baptist Church under the leadership of Pastor George McCalep in Decatur, GA.

He moved to Statesboro, GA in 2000 and made many friends at the Summit Apartments and Westwood Nursing Home. All who knew Michael will miss and mourn him. His smile will greatly be missed. Michael is in a better place.

Michael was joined in holy matrimony in 1973 to Delores Moody and from this union four children were born, Michael Norlfeet Martin and Shannon Renee King preceded their father in death. He was also preceded in death by Romero and Slyvester (Slyvia) Martin; brothers, Freddie, Tim, Darryl and Phillip (Pumpkin) Martin; sisters, Mary Bender of Chicago, Judy and Linda Martin both of Detroit, MI.

Michael leaves to cherish his memory: daughters, Ayanna E. (Demetrius) Wright of Statesboro, GA, Naomi D. Martin (Stephen Young) of Covington, GA and Tamiko Franklin of Chicago; brother, Romero Jr. (Edna) Martin of South Bend, IN; sister, Harriett Booker of Detroit, MI; two special cousins, Robert (Jeri) Adair, Douglas (Fran) Wilson of Dallas, Texas, Brenda and Devoris Dotson of Delaware, Sherry Bradley of Milwaukee, WI, Mary Crawford and Kenny Crawford of South Bend, IN; special friends, Early Bates of South Bend, IN, Dorthy Scott, Flecter Williams of Statesboro, GA, eleven grandchildren and a host of nieces, nephews and friends and cousins and other relatives.
