Paul Wilson Bradfield

Paul Wilson Bradfield was born in South Bend, IN on August 26, 1928 to Paul and Helen Bradfield, the oldest of three children. Growing up, Paul was active, adventurous, and a talented athlete. He attended South Bend Central High School, playing for the Varsity Football Team.

After graduating from high school in 1946, Paul joined the U.S. Marine Corps for their college entry program. He completed Boot Camp at Parris Island, SC and was assigned to the Fleet Marine Force as a radar technician at Cherry Point, NC. He had follow-on tours at Camp Lejuene, NC and the Naval Weapons Depot in Crane, IN. In January 1949, he was accepted at the U.S. Navy Preparatory School, Bainbridge, MD and in August 1949 reported to the U.S. Naval Academy with the Class of 1953.

While at the Naval Academy, Paul met the “love of his life”, Marion Elizabeth Herbert, from Norristown, PA and left the Navy for a civilian career. Paul and Marion were married in June 1950.

Paul finished undergraduate business studies at Valparaiso University.

He was a member of Westminster Presbyterian Church of South Bend, IN.

Paul enjoyed his family as husband, father, and grandfather. His deep, booming voice and laugh will be remembered. He was an avid sports fan, and loved watching Navy football, the Chicago Bears, Chicago Cubs, and any sport his grandsons were playing.

He appreciated being included as an active member of the U.S. Naval Academy Alumni Association and regularly participated in the monthly luncheons and football tailgates when Navy came to Notre Dame. He regularly attended the annual South Bend Marine Corps birthday ball. Semper Fi. When a grandson went to the Naval Academy, Paul began attending Annapolis homecomings and reunions with his Class of 1953 shipmates.

Paul is survived by Marion, his wife of 72 years: their four children Paul III (Linda) Bradfield, Ann (Jim) Wilson, Connie (Dan) Dowhower and Sally Cripe; five grandchildren Jacob (Kelly) Wilson, Peter (Amanda) Wilson, Jeffrey (Elizabeth) Zimmerman, Paul IV (Mary) Bradfield, and Joshua Cripe; nine great-grandchildren (Jacob, Avery, Grant, Paul V, Parker, Morgan, Max, Marlee and Macyn). Two sisters, Coralyn Carl and Miriam Cory; and his Step-Granddaughter Ginny Cripe.

There will be no public services at this time. Palmer Funeral Home – Welsheimer North Chapel is assisting the family with arrangements.
