SOUTH BEND - Rita M. Monaco, 94, passed away Sunday, May 27, 2018, at her daughter's home in South Bend. Rita was born November 23, 1923 in South Bend, Indiana to Alfred J. and Mary Catherine (Weis) Hein, both of whom have preceded her in death. She was united in marriage to Lawrence Henry Monaco, PhD., on August 4, 1954 in South Bend, Indiana, who has preceded her in death, as well as her brother, Walter Hein, and brother-in-law, Richard Soisson.

Rita is survived by her children, Vincent J. Monaco of Kingston, New York, Mary R. (Rob) Morgan of South Bend, Indiana, Theresa M. (Mark) Brown of Longmeadow, Massachusetts, Loretta M. (Neal) Allen of Sturbridge, Massachusetts, and Martin L. (Candi) Monaco of New York City, New York; ten grandchildren, Andrea, Adrienne, Rory, Audrey, Conner, Shannon, Anthony, Jordan, Christian, and Jeremy; and six great-grandchildren, Trevor, Vittoria, Gabriel, Lucy, Theresa, and Alice. She is also survived by her sister, Rosemay Soisson of Kalamazoo, Michigan, and a host of nieces and nephews.

Rita was a graduate of Central High School and a member of several choirs throughout the course of her lifetime. She worked as a private secretary at the University of Notre Dame for the editor of The American Midland Naturalist publication for seven years. She was a member of the St. Francis Hospital Auxillary for over 40 years and a member of the Legion of Mary.

Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11:00 a.m. at The Sanctuary at St. Paul's on Saturday, June 2, 2018. Friends may call one hour prior at St. Paul's. Rita will be laid to rest at Calvary Cemetery, Poughkeepsie, New York, at 11:00 a.m., Saturday, June 9, 2018.
