Benedict R. “Ben” Jagla

Benedict R. “Ben” Jagla, 89 years old, passed away at 2:30 p.m. on Wednesday, February 2, 2022 at Golden Living Center-Fountainview. Ben was born on September 20, 1932 in South Bend to the late Joseph and Stella (Cyman) Jagla. He has remained a lifelong resident of South Bend. On September 10, 1960 in South Bend, Ben and Marlene Schini were united in marriage.

Along with Marlene, loving wife of 61 years, Ben is survived by their daughter, Julie Mayo; four grandchildren, Audra and Reba Mayo, and Nicole and Paige Burkus; sister, Patricia (Raymond) Demski of South Bend; and many nieces and nephews. Along with his parents, Ben was preceded in death by his daughter, Kristine Burkus; sisters, Evelyn Wickey and Irene Stahl; and brothers, Edward, Joseph Jr. and Eugene Jagla.

Ben graduated from South Bend Central High School in 1952 where he excelled in basketball and baseball. He attended Ball State University where he was a member of the basketball team. After two years of attending college, Ben was drafted and joined the United States Army. After marrying Marlene, he was employed with Bendix Corporation, retiring from Honeywell. After retirement, Ben continued working within the photography field and carpet cleaning.

Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Tuesday, February 8, 2022 at St. Matthew Cathedral, 1701 Miami Street, South Bend. Graveside services and burial will follow at Southlawn Cemetery, South Bend. Friends may visit with the family one hour prior to Mass at church on Tuesday. Palmer Funeral Home-Guisinger Chapel, South Bend is assisting.

In lieu of flowers, contributions in memory of Benedict R. Jagla may be donated to St. Matthew Cathedral, 1701 Miami Street, South Bend, IN 46613. The family would like to give a special thank you to Kirk Mikusak for his friendship and kindness to Ben over the years. “So long Ben, you will always be in our hearts.”
