SOUTH BENDJames C. Hatchett, 51, of 1817 Fassnacht Street, South Bend, Ind., passed away after a brief illness on Tuesday, Feb. 10, at the Los Angeles Veterans Hospital, Los Angeles, Calif.

He was born to the union of Clyde Hatchett and Frances McLien on June 16, 1946, in South Bend.

He graduated from the former Central High School in 1966 and later enlisted in the United States Armed Services. He was a disabled veteran, having served in the United States Air Force and later in the United States Coast Guard. He received honorable discharges from both branches.

He leaves to mourn his passing his mother, Ms. Frances McLien Smith of South Bend; a sister, Sandra Hatchett of Elkhart, Ind.; four aunts, Ms. Mary Joe McLien of South Bend, Mrs. Dyanne McLien of Memphis, Tenn., Lois Davis and Calvivian Howard, both of Chicago, Ill.; two uncles, Mr. Clarence Hatchett of Augusta, Ga. and Mr. Charles McLien, II, of Memphis, Tenn.; two foster aunts, Ms. Ruby Bell of Elkhart and Mrs. Ernestine Burnett of Chicago; four nieces and one nephew; and eight cousins, Lucy Mae Doaks (Leon), Frances Carter (Tom), Mary Louise Johnson, Geneva Harris, Sharon Scott, Debra McLien, Clarence Hatchett, Jr., and Charles McLien.

He was preceded in death by his father, Clyde Hatchett; his maternal grandparents, Charles and Mattie McLien; and by his paternal grandparents, Clyde and Leoleyer Hatchett.

Visitation will be from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Friday, followed by funeral services at 1 p.m. at the Clark Funeral Chapel. Burial will be in Highland Cemetery.

The Clark Funeral Chapel is in charge of arrangements.
