Verne Leroy Kryder - Class Of 1943 VIEW PROFILE

Verne L. Kryder

June 19, 1925 ~ December 15, 2021 (age 96)

On Wednesday, December 15, 2021, Verne L. Kryder, one of “The Greatest Generation,” who fought in France in 1943, passed away at age 96. He left this plane to be with our Lord and to reunite with his late wife, Mary Lou, with whom he had spent 73 of his 96 years. He was in the company of his children at the time of his death.

Verne was born on June 19, 1925 in South Bend, IN, to Charles and Irene Kryder. Verne graduated in 1943 from South Bend Central High School and immediately took off to serve his country in the U.S. Army, where he achieved the rank of corporal before being severely wounded by a German sniper. He was a true patriot who loved his country, and a hero in the eyes of his entire family.

He worked at Indiana & Michigan Electric Company (AEP) for 40+ years, but that was not the story of his life. The hallmark of a life well-lived consists of traits that can be observed, not things to be touched. Verne will always be remembered for his kindness, his humility and his sense of humor, but most of all, for his love of his wife, Mary Lou. It colored everything he did. He was totally devoted to her and his family. His other most notable achievement was the sense of devotion that he developed in, and for, his four kids, who survive him: Vickie Kryder-Gray (Phil), Charlie Kryder (Karen), Linda Vleaminck (Al), and Phillip Kryder (Mary). These are accomplishments of far greater value than business success or accumulation of financial wealth. The memories that he inspired are the kind that people tell of in stories and song.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Mary Lou; his brothers, Don (Betty) Kryder and Harold (Dorothy) Kryder, both of South Bend; and sisters, Lucille Seider (Jack) of South Bend, and Beatrice Cole (Elmer II) of Tampa, Florida. Verne and Mary Lou shared eight grandchildren, Jeff, Heather, Sara, Matt, Katie, Jordan, Alexandra and Jenna, as well as seven great-grandchildren, Lucas, William, Nicholas, Jacob, Lexi, Nikki and Evie.

Private services will be held at Palmer Funeral Home – Hickey Chapel, 17131 Cleveland Road, South Bend. Verne will be laid to rest in St. Joseph Valley Memorial Park, Granger, IN.

Expressions of sympathy in memory of Verne may be donated to Center for Hospice Care, 501 Comfort Place, Mishawaka, IN 46545.
