SALVATORE C. LAZZARA

GRANGER - Salvatore C. Lazzara, 84, departed from this earth to his eternal resting place on October 5, 2010, after a courageous battle due to complications of surgery. While there is relief that he is no longer suffering, his amazing personality, laugh and caring soul will leave a void in the lives of so many. Salvatore's life began January 26, 1926, when he was born to Charles and Margaret (Datillo) Lazzara. The family moved to South Bend from Vincennes in 1936.

He graduated from Central High School in 1944.

He then joined the U.S. Navy on March 10, 1944, during WW II, serving in the South Pacific on a destroyer, DD874-USS Duncan. He was honorably discharged May 27, 1946.

On May 8, 1954, he married the love of his life, Anna L. Galasso, who survives. To their union they had one daughter, Janet "Jan" Lazzara of Granger. Also surviving are two grandchildren, who meant so much to him, Brian C. Nordan of Fort Wayne and Angela M. Jasinski of Granger; and his siblings, Terese Binder, Anne Kovas and Joseph Lazzara.

One sister, Mary Lazzara, preceded him in death. Mr. Lazzara was the Detective Lieutenant for the South Bend Police Department, where he retired after 27 years of service. He then became co-owner of Lazzara and O'Hara Soft Water, which is still run by family. Above all of Salvatore's accomplishments, what he was most passionate about was living life with no regrets and being a great husband, father, grandfather and friend. His legacy and memory will live on in the lives of every individual who had the opportunity to know him. If at all possible to try to sum up his life, it would be as Frank Sinatra said, "I did it my way!"

Visitation will be held today, October 10th, from 3-6 PM in the McGann Hay, Granger Chapel, SR 23, enter off Cherry Road. A vigil service will take place at 4:30 PM. A Mass of Christian Burial will be Monday at 10:00 AM in St. Pius X Catholic Church, with visitation one hour prior. Burial will follow at St. Joseph Valley Memorial Park.
