Thomas G. Stangas , 79, of East South Street, South Bend, Ind., passed away following a lengthy illness on Thursday, Sept. 11, in the Saint Joseph Regional Medical Center.

Mr. Stangas was born Feb. 5, 1924, in Grand Rapids, Mich. He was preceded in death by his parents, George T. and Vivian (Gruyas) Stangas ; and by his brother, Gus G. Stangas .

He is survived by his two nephews, George G. (Sue) Stangas and James G. Stangas ; two great-nieces, Peri Rebecca Stangas and Deanna Paige Stangas ; and by his sister-in-law, Elaine Stangas , all of South Bend.

Moving here in 1930, Mr. Stangas was a longtime resident of South Bend. He graduated from South Bend Central High School in 1943, and graduated from Purdue University in 1950 with a degree in civil engineering. He was a member of Chi Epsilon, the National Civil Engineering Honor Society. Mr. Stangas was also a member of the Alumni Association of Purdue University and the South Bend Alumni Association.

Mr. Stangas enjoyed a wide and varied career involving many different aspects of engineering at companies such as the Bendix Corporation, Hamilton-Standard, and the Reith Riley Construction Company. Prior to his retirement in 1975, Mr. Stangas was employed by City Planning Associates, Inc., Mishawaka, Ind., where he worked as a senior associate involved with community renewal programs.

Mr. Stangas was proud to be a Greek-American. An active member of St. Andrew Greek Orthodox Church, South Bend, he was a former member of the parish council. Mr. Stangas was a 50-year life member of the American Hellenic Educational Progressive Association (AHEPA), Chapter 100. During his tenure, he served in many offices including chapter vice president, secretary, and captain of the guard. Mr. Stangas also belonged to the Northern Indiana Historical Society.

Possessing great artistic talent, Mr. Stangas dreamed of one day becoming a cartoonist. Although never achieving this dream, Mr. Stangas became a skilled amateur artist and spent many hours sketching famous people, notably the Notre Dame football coaches through Gerry Faust. Mr. Stangas was very knowledgeable on all things Notre Dame, and was very proud that both his nephews graduated from the University.

Visitation will be from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. today, Sept. 12, in the Welsheimer Funeral Home, 521 N. William St., South Bend. A Trisagion service will be held this evening at 7:30 p.m. Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. on Saturday, Sept. 13, in St. Andrew Greek Orthodox Church, 52455 N. Ironwood Road, South Bend. The Rev. Father George Konstantopoulos will officiate.
