Eugene Raymond Barkowski

Eugene Raymond Barkowski. aged 23, son of Edward I, Barkowski, of North College street, a  wounded veteran of world war II, died it 9:25 a.m. at  Memorial Hospital where he had been a patient for six weeks. He had been ill for 18 weeks. He was a junior in Western Michigan College, Kalamazoo. MI.

He served as a paratrooper in the rank of sergeant in the 824 airborne division In the European theater of war. He was wounded Dec. 27, 1944, during the Battle of the Bulge. receiving shrapnel in his leg. He was wounded again during the invasion of Germany. He received two Bronze Stars. Good Conduct Medal, and the Purple Heart Medal with an Oak Leaf Cluster.

Surviving besides the father is a brother Leonard, of South Bend. Friends may call after 6 p.m. Friday in the home. The funeral will be held at 9 a.m. Monday in St. Stanislaus Catholic church with Ray. Sigmund A. Jankowski. I C.S.C., pastor. officiating. Burial will be in St. Joseph Polish cemetery. Members of South Bend post No. 6, Veterans of Foreign Wan,, of which Mr. Barkowski was a member, will be in charge of military rites at the grave.
