SOUTH BEND - Mrs. Joanna (Brooks) Wheeler, 76, of North Studebaker Street, entered into eternal life at 5:45 pm on Friday, February 24, 2017, surrounded by her family and friends. Joanna was born on January 10, 1941, to the union of Gilbert and Alma (Estes) Brooks, who both preceded her in death. Also preceding her in death were one daughter, Alice Stein Wheeler; her grandparents, John and Vera Hutchinson; twin brother and sister, Gilbert Brooks, Jr., and Willa Lacy; her father and mother-in-law, James and Beatrice Wheeler; one “very special” son-in-law, Pastor Laneal Williams; and one “special” nephew, James E. “JimBoy” Williams.

In September of 1961, Joanna married her husband of more than 55 years, James E. Wheeler II. He survives to mourn her passing, along with one daughter, Cheryl E. (Jimmy) Wheeler; two sons, Rev. James E. (Francine) Wheeler III and Everette T. (Marilyn) Wheeler; one very special grandson, who she reared as her own, Carlos D. Wheeler; four other grandchildren, Michael, Tyrenia, Terence and Nakisha; fifteen great-granchildren; one surviving sister, Esther L. (Edward) Wade, all of South Bend; and one “sissy,” Mrs. Eleanor (Johnny) Lacy of Balch Springs, TX. Also surviving Joanna are two brothers, Merrill Brooks of Moreno Valley, CA, and Robert (Sandra) Brooks of Bryen, OH; one sister-in-law, Violet Riley; three brothers-in-law, Maxie Wheeler, Edward Kinslow, and Lacy Hunt, all of South Bend, IN; one very special niece, who was her namesake, Arlene Joanne Marky; a special nephew, Rev. David “Bub” Riley; and a host of nieces and nephews, cousins, her Raco and St. Paul Bethel families and friends.

To my sister, humbly submitted by Esther Wade: As time goes by, peace and acceptance will come to me, but the beautiful light of my sister's spirit will never fade. As I remember you, I'm holding you close in forever thoughts and prayers!

Funeral services for Mrs. Joanna Wheeler will be at 11:00 am on Saturday, March 4, 2017, at her church-home, St. Paul Bethel Baptist Church, 621 N. Lindsey Street, South Bend, IN 46616. Pastor Gilbert C. Washington will officiate. Graveside services and burial will follow at Highland Cemetery, next to her daughter, Alice Stein Wheeler. Friends may visit with the family from 10:00-11:00 am on Saturday, prior to the services at the church.
