SOUTH BEND - Hiawatha Cannon passed away at the great age of 94 years old, surrounded by her loving family in her home on Saturday October 21st, 2017. Hiawatha was born on March 22nd, 1923, in Marks, Mississippi to her mother Johnnie (Teague) Williams and father Dolman Campbell, both of whom preceded her in death.

When she was young, Hiawatha and her mother moved to South Bend where she attended Central High School. She was employed 32 years at St. Joseph Regional Medical Center in environmental services retiring having served as Department Manager and Supervisor, then returned for an additional 15 years finally leaving in 2002. Hiawatha was a member of Olivet African Methodist Episcopal Church of South Bend, serving as a Stewardess. She traveled all over the United States with a senior travel group. She also had a large part in the upbringing of three generations of grandchildren who affectionately called her Grandmadee.

Along with her parents, Hiawatha was preceded in death by her brother Willie Campbell, her only daughter Dolores C. (Cannon) Bryant, and ex-husband Nathan (Jimmy) Cannon. She is survived by her son-in-law Bobby J. Bryant of South Bend, granddaughters Joy (Bryant) Wright and Bobbie Bryant of South Bend, grandsons Anthony (Tony) Bryant of Indianapolis and Ernest Kim Bryant of Hollywood, FL, 12 great-grandchildren, 13 great-great grandchildren, and special nieces, nephews, and cousins.

Family and friends will gather Friday October 27th, 2017, from 12:00 p.m. until time of service at 1:00 p.m. at Olivet A.M.E. Church 719 N. Notre Dame Ave., South Bend, IN 46617.

Hiawatha will be laid to rest next to her mother at Riverview Cemetery in South Bend.
