Patricia Lucille (Kindig) “Pat” Ross

Jan. 13, 1928 - Jan. 28, 2016

SOUTH BEND - Patricia Lucille Kindig “Pat” Ross passed away January 28, 2016 in her sleep in the early morning hours at Ebenezer Deer Crest in Red Wing, Minn., where she had been a resident the past two years. She was 88 years old.

Pat was born on January 13, 1928 to J. Edward and Gertrude Kindig in South Bend, Indiana, and attended South Bend schools, including Central High School, which she graduated from in 1945.

She then attended Purdue University, where she earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in Home Economics in 1949. While at Purdue, Pat joined Delta Gamma as a member of that sorority's Beta Iota chapter, starting a long association with DG that included an active alumnae role which included conducting vision-screening clinics for pre-school-age children—living up to Delta Gamma's motto, “Do Good.”

She was also a President of DG's Syracuse, NY-area alumnae association in the early 1970s before becoming Province Alumnae Chairman for New York and New England. She also served as Province Alumnae Chairman for Pennsylvania and New Jersey after she and her family relocated to suburban Philadelphia in 1974. Later, she served two terms on Delta Gamma's Council as Vice President-Alumnae.

Pat was recognized by Delta Gamma with its Cable Award in 1982.

In 1947, while at Purdue, she met Stuart T. Ross, and they dated for two years before marrying in 1949. They raised two sons together while living in places such as Birmingham, MI; Costa Mesa, CA; Bloomfield Hills, MI, Manlius, NY; Devon, PA; and Red Wing, MN.

Pat was also a long time Red Cross volunteer, starting as a “Candy Striper” in high school, then as a “Gray Lady” in later years while living in suburban Detroit, and near Syracuse, NY. More recently, she was a “Pink Lady” volunteer at St. John's Hospital in Red Wing, MN (as well as President of the St. John's Hospital Auxiliary), along with serving on the board of River Region Health Services.

After moving to Red Wing in 1976, she also became an avid swimmer in her backyard pool, golfer, Monday cyclist with the “Washday Wheelers,” and a partner in the River Peddler antiques shop that was located in Red Wing's historic St. James Hotel for many years.

Pat is survived by her sons, Douglas T. (Doreen) of North Wales, PA and Scott E., of Riverview, Florida; three grandchildren: Peter (Melissa Gerst) of Bel Air, MD, Jonathan (Melissa Benson) of Ridgecrest, CA, and Sarah (Lisa Rake) of Norristown, PA; and two great-grandchildren: Paytynn Ann Ross and Carter Douglas Ross, both of Ridgecrest, CA.

She was preceded in death by her husband of 52 years, Stuart T. Ross, as well as by her brothers, John. J. Kindig and Richard J. Kindig.

Mass of Resurrection will be 11 am on Monday, February 1, 2016 at The Church of Saint Joseph, Red Wing, Minn. with Father Thomas M. Kommers presiding. Visitation will be from 2-4 p.m. on Sunday, January 31, 2016 at Mahn Family Funeral Home Bodelson-Mahn Chapel, Red Wing and one hour prior to service at church.
